The Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown is a non-profit tax-exempt organization that receives no government funding and is not a United Way agency. It depends on donations from individuals, congregations and corporations. Each year, two fundraising events are held: Share the Bounty and Hunger Walk.
The Community Soup Kitchen opens its doors to serve a wholesome meal to those in need, including the homeless, working poor, elderly and disabled, 365 days a year. To assist in this mission, 30 member congregations provide meals for the Soup Kitchen each month throughout the year. Groups from Saint James Church host a meal on the fourth Saturday of each month. They donate and prepare the food, serve the meal, set up and clean up for approximately 200. The Soup Kitchen has two locations in Morristown: Saint Peter’s Church on Maple Avenue and the Church of the Redeemer on South Street.
Host groups prepare an eight course meal for up to 200. For most of the guests at the Soup Kitchen, this is their only meal of the day. The meal must include soup, salad, entree, starch, vegetables, fresh fruit, bread, dessert and beverages: milk, fruit juice and water. The soup and entree are provided by the Soup Kitchen. A supervisor from the Soup Kitchen is always present to instruct and assist with the meal. Participation includes four kitchen volunteers trained in Safe Food Handling and 10 dining room volunteers. The four kitchen volunteers work from 9:30-1:30. The dining room volunteers work from 11:00-1:00. Youngsters may serve in the dining room and must be at least 12 years old and those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
All ministries and organizations at Saint James are encouraged to participate, as are families and neighborhood groups. Time spent volunteering with The Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center counts as service hours for young people.
Then the righteous will answer Him, “Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink?”… The King will answer and say to them, “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it for one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it for Me. — Matthew 25:34-40
